I am in the midst of upgrading my collection. Since I traded and downloaded these, there have been many terrific upgrades. I'm basically re-downloading all of my bootlegs and noting the source and when I downloaded it. I'm not doing this for silver discs as those are the best sources and are my favorites. There are only a few audience recordings here, so the sound quality of this classic rock and world music bootleg collection gets better every week.

I get too many emails asking for "free trades" from people without trade lists and from people offering to buy bootlegs. I trade with other music collectors. Not with people who have a few mp3's but "have to have a certain show". Don't ask to buy bootlegs from me. Don't ask me to copy officially released cd's - I buy them.

The Wonders of Music Collecting!

I'll never forget the moment I discovered what bootlegs were in 1998. I thought I'd heard most of the music I'd ever hear of The Who, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. A bunch of studio albums and a few live cd's were all most of us knew about. Unless you were into the original late 60's and 70's LP bootleg scene, you'd have no way of knowing what the cd burner and the Internet were about to do to music.

I was living in Houston at the time and walked to a local music store and was amazed to see so many cd's that I'd never heard of in the "imports" section. I bought a few of The Who and The Beatles and ran home. Today we call these "silver disc bootlegs" and no one in their right mind would consider paying $25 per cd. But in the 90's, silver disc bootlegs were the other doorway to this new music. Outtakes of Beatles songs, Pete Townshend demos, complete Who shows - a treasure of music! Thanks to bootlegs, The Beatles released their Anthology series and The Who eventually released a complete Live At Leeds. Today, bands regularly release studio outtakes, demos and live songs as bonus tracks on cd's. The bootleg labels contributed a lot to music by raising our expectations and by causing fans and collectors to ask for and expect more from the big labels.

These untouched Who and Led Zeppelin shows are mindblowing. The Who's 1969 and 1970 tours and Led Zeppelin's 1975 tour (US and the UK Earl's Court shows) are, to me, the top of the top of live rock music. The Who played Tommy, My Generation and Naked Eye with such intensity. There are a few excellent soundboard shows - most complete and some partial - of this era. By 1975, Led Zeppelin had quite a repertoire. They played most of these songs in concerts considered long even for the 70's. Most of the bootlegs from that tour are 3-4 cd's. Flying Circus and the Earl's Court shows are the best and I hope they'll be officially released on day. Led Zeppelin took their audience to another planet!

I went to every music store in the area and in other cities during that period and bought dozens of bootlegs. The silver disc bootlegs that I bought are featured at http://www.sixtiescollection.com/silverdiscs 

I bought my first cd burner in December 2000 and since then, I've done literally hundreds of trades. A friend set up a second pc as a "cd ripping machine" to speed things up. It was fun and I learned a lot about sound, music and computers.At the same time, I also bought most of the official albums of the bands that I collect here. If it looks like I have a lot of bootlegs, I have more official cd's than bootlegs. 

A few years ago, I went through the process of cleaning out bootlegs that I didn't listen to - mostly audience recordings. Everyone is different on this, but for me there's nothing like a soundboard recording. I kept the best audience recordings (like The Who Toronto 1975 which I'd keep even if it wasn't a silver disc!) and gave away boxes and boxes of cd's. This is why I can't take every trade that comes my way. My collection is "tighter" now - 99% of the shows here are excellent sounding A+ quality to my ears. 

I take my collection seriously but keep it fun. Enjoy looking at my bootleg collection.. :)

The Who came back in 96-97 to do 'redo' Quadrophenia. The original 1973 tour was great, but the technology of the day
made it harder to do (see Tales From The Who). These Quadrophenia shows have other musicians adding a good touch - 
like Phil Daniels (the star, Jimmy, of the original movie Quadrophenia), Billy Idol and others. Each show is a bit different 
and they succeed in communicating the message with the dialogue and music.

Dream of 69. Stuff from 1969 and 1970, including Tommy at SUNY. 

My Generation. Pirate version of My Generation remastered by the bootlegger
with 10 bonus tracks. Because of a dispute between The Who and the first
person who signed them, this is the only Who cd not yet remastered for
cd. It'll finally be done in 2002 - took them this long to agree!

From Lifehouse To Leeds. One of the original Who bootleg albums from the 70's.
Lifehouse outtakes + Live at Leeds. (Lifehouse = Who's Next)

Pure Rock Theatre. Like Dream of 69, shows from the same era.
Who The Fuck. Outtakes from 1965-1966. Really cool stuff, a bit psychedelic.
Who Zoo Two! This one was also an album bootleg in the 70's. Has Townshend
doing a commercial for the US Air Force! Outtakes from 1965-1969. And an 
alternate vocal of a Tommy song.

Life With The Moons - Upgrades From The Boxed Set. A bootleg answer to the
box set! The best of the compilations by far. Has Keith and Pete comedy 
and outtakes. Also Daltrey and Pete joking before Behind Blue Eyes.
The record publishers wouldn't dare release something this good! 

Maximum BBC. Till Live at the BBC came out in 2000, this was the only
way to hear this! Who at the BBC - its live, but in a BBC studio so has 
a cool feel to it. 60's to early 70's.

Greatest Hits Live. Their greatest hits from various shows.
Higher Education. Some Georgetown 1969 + *unreleased* Townshend demos.
Maximum Live Rarities - Lots of live from various shows.

The Collector's Who's Next - From the German Polydor Master Tapes, 
the only true stereo version of the original mixes that exists!! Bonus tracks

If you're a Who fan, these are gifts from the gods. Townshend plays
everything. It shows how he really knew how the end result would end 
up. He shows the bassist, drummer and vocalist how their part should
sound with incredible detail. If you like these, buy Townshend's
Scoop series (which has lots of stuff not here). Its worth it, if 
only to support one of the few musicians with demos good enough to be released.

The Punk Meets The Godfather. Quadrophenia demos. 

Lifehouse and Quadrophenia Demos. 2 cds. Complete. Till Pete's Lifehouse 
Chonricles came out in 2000, this was the only place for Lifehouse/Who's Next
demos. Quadrophenia demos still have not been officially released (besides 
a few on Scoop).
